Our Mission Work

Moorings Presbyterian Church designates approximately 12% of its overall budget to support missions in Southwest Florida and abroad.  It should also be noted that many members dedicate their time and talent to leadership within these same agencies.

Among the agencies supported in Immokalee:

Other local agencies include:

  • Child Care of Southwest Florida
  • Neighborhood Health Clinic provides health care to the working poor.
  • Salvation Army Child Care Center
  • Harry Chapin Food Bank provides over 4 million pounds of food annually to 50,000 people monthly.
  • St. Matthew’s House whose mission is to provide housing for the homeless, food for the needy, and an opportunity to change lives in a spiritual environment that is both compassionate and disciplined.
  • Habitat for Humanity:  for the last four years, a family of Moorings Presbyterian has issued a challenge, met each year by our church, to help build a Habitat house.
  • Senior Friendship Center provides medical and dental services to uninsured persons over 50 years of age.
  • Project Help operates a 24 hour telephone crisis and referral hotline and offers counseling services for rape victims and crime, suicide, and sudden death survivors.
  • Grace Place for Children is a faith-based neighborhood center offering assistance to families in need in Golden Gate through teaching essential school and life skills.

Among organizations serving international communities:

  • Jim Smith School, named for the late Moorings member, in Balcones de Palin, Guatemala.  Moorings  provides scholarships to 100 students and, during the last 7 years, financial aid to the community for construction of a church,  a water tower, a bridge, paved roads, a computer lab, and operation of a medical clinic including medical equipment and pharmaceutical products.
  • ECHO is dedicated to assist those Christian Agricultural Missionaries sharing the gospel throughout the developing world by providing innovative ideas, information, agricultural training and seeds critical to growing food under harsh conditions.
  • Miracles in Action supports and helps manage sustainable development projects including building 10 schools, funding potable water systems, installing stoves, and distributing wheelchairs and prosthetics.
  • Medical Benevolence Foundation: Moorings Presbyterian funds help build a nursing school in Haiti.
  • Bibles for the World and funds to help build a new Sielmat hospital in India.
  • Two missionaries serving in Guatemala and Bangladesh   rlarsen@emiusa.org  AND  leslieymorgan@gmail.com
  • Presbyterian Hunger Relief Program.

Among PCUSA organizations, Moorings supports One Great Hour of Sharing, Presbyterian Disaster Assistance, and the Christmas Joy Offering.

Counseling

Persons in need of short term counseling can seek support through one of the clergy. Other counseling needs can be addressed with Ms. Lea Leonard, LCSW, CTS (Licensed Clinical Social Worker and Certified Trauma Specialist). Lea currently occupies the counseling office upstairs in Moss Hall, and is available for individual, couple, and family counseling. In exchange for office space, Lea has the flexibility to offer her services at a reduced rate to Moorings members and friends.

Her counseling ministry is entitled "Wings of Change" and the list of her areas of expertise is long and impressive. She has proven experience in dealing with anxiety, depression, grief and loss, bi-polar disorder, trauma, behavioral challenges (anger management, ADHD), Asperger's Syndrome, self injury, and life changes. Please call her at (239)287-0810, email her at lealeonard@hotmail.com, or visit her website at www.wings-of-change.com.

Community Outreach

Moorings Presbyterian Church takes outreach to heart. Central to that concept is our Baker Family Life Center and the Moorings Presbyterian Church Disaster Preparedness and Response Committee.

When the Baker Family Life Center was constructed in 2000, it was built to hurricane specifications. Since we are located west of US 41, we are unable to provide shelter during the hurricane, because people in our area are under mandatory evacuation rules. However, we have signed agreements with Collier County Red Cross and Collier County Emergency Management to be a site for response and recovery after a disaster. In addition to the hardened building, there is a generator that will make the building fully functional, as well as provide power for our commercial kitchen.

The Disaster Preparedness Committee has been preparing our facilities and members for the reality of living in an area prone to hurricanes. A group of people in our congregation have been trained CERT Community Emergency Response Teams. (More information may be found at http://www.citizencorps.gov/cert).

THANKSGIVING DAY DINNERS
Jim and Kathy Shannon, long time members of Moorings Presbyterian Church, spearhead the “Thanksgiving in the Park” dinners at the Guadalupe Center in Immokalee. Now in its 25th year, this annual event serves over 4,000 Thanksgiving dinners to the deserving families of Immokalee. Fellow members of our church join the Shannons to give thanks for our blessings, raise support for the Guadalupe Center, and serve the many dinners.

HABITAT FOR HUMANITY
Moorings Presbyterian Church has been actively involved for over 25 years.
